​The “SfN Chapter - Minho-Portugal” is a regional group (‘chapter’) belonging to the Society for Neuroscience - the largest Neuroscience society in the world. This chapter has as its main objectives the education and promotion of neuroscience research in the Minho region - Portugal, as well as establishing an active network of local institutions, academic or non-academic, involved with neuroscience.

 

We seek to achieve these goals by promoting activities in two target audiences:

 

A. The local community at large.

 

• To promote neuroscience literacy and raise awareness in the local community about the importance of neuroscience:

  1. Creating resources or programs to demystify neuroscience and inform the public about mental health and neurological diseases;

  2. Through educational events and seminars with the public to promote knowledge about neuroscience, for example through Brain Week, the development of programs in schools and interactive demonstrations;

  3. Deconstructing scientific news by presenting it in simple language but maintaining rigor, thus facilitating access and understanding of scientific discoveries and topics for the general public.

 

B. Local Neuroscience Community.

 

• Promote collaboration between the different local stakeholders who research or work, in different ways, in neuroscience in the Minho region:

  1. Establish strategic partnerships with local institutions, hospitals or other scientific organisations to promote synergies both in terms of joint scientific projects and in scientific dissemination projects.

  2. Develop and maintain a comprehensive database with information on professionals, and their skills, linked to neuroscience in the region.

  3. Promote networking events, through the organisation of regular meetings, social events and scientific meetings that bring together neuroscientists, clinicians, students and other enthusiasts from the region, fostering the exchange of ideas and strengthening the neuroscience community.

  4. Promote continuous access to the latest scientific advances in Neuroscience.
